Effective programs included techniques to improve dietary and physical activity habits, with some featuring strategies such as goal setting, problem solving and relapse prevention.

Researchers found that after completing weight management programs, obese children would weigh between 3 pounds and 23 pounds less, on average, than obese children not involved in such programs. Among those enrolled, the weight difference would be greatest among heavier children as well as in those enrolled in more intensive programs. Researchers also found that weight improvements could be maintained for up to a year after the program ended.

"Effective prevention is the best way to stem the childhood obesity epidemic, but we also have to find effective and healthy ways of helping our children and teens who already are obese get to a healthier weight," said AHRQ Director Carolyn M. Clancy, M.D. "AHRQ's new evidence report helps identify possible solutions." http://nicksdietetics.com/node.php?blogid=33 http://nicksdietetics.com/node.php?blogid=33 Mon, 29 Sep 2008 09:58:00 EST What's We Can ! ?

We Can!™ stands for Ways to Enhance Children's Activity & Nutrition. After slow review, this study indicates nothing newer than previous studies suggested: Low carbs diets works tremendously well when compared to a variety of culturally popular and accepted diets.

Link to Research >>>>

What is controversial about a low-carb diet winning first prize in this study?

1) This particular low-carb diet was allowed a maximum of 120grams of Carbohydrates/ Daily after a two month induction phase of just 20g/daily.
Every nutritional adequate dietary regimen provides vitamins and minerals from carbohydrate food sources. There will be an inadequate supply of these nutrient compounds if the carbohydrate intake hovers around 480 grams. This practice is unsustainable, especially when food variety keeps our sanity level. Who would want to pop pills to fill the void for the remainder of their life?

The most realistic research question that should be asked are:

1) Is it economically affordable, for the majority to follow the diet on a long-term basis?
A low carb diet or more commonly known as a high protein (Keto diet) is already to expensive to maintain. How can you exspect the average middle income individual to afford the cost of many pounds of meat, poultry, eggs, cheese and dairy? Stick with a diet routine that is affordable for the majority is key. This diet does not do it.

2) Does the diet prove to be the best diet for long-term weight loss maintenance and not just significant quick short-term results?
Remember the Rabbit and the Turtle story! A steady dietary lifestyle is much easier to manage than a quick and new dietary routine. Say no, to yo yo!

3) Is this diet healthy on a long-term life basis?
You can drive to work or ride a bicycle. Both resources work. But very soon you will notice that saving gas puts you at high risk of being hit with a car. Hypothermia is not nice and heat strokes play hard. You might get to work late and get home even later. We all will become old and wrinkled someday. Yet one fact that many Americans don’t give close attention to is nutritional medical treatment. With the increasing rise of preventable chronic diseases, more prevention interventions are required for our age-old priceless citizens. It is still widely accepted by many Americans that there is not enough money to go around and there is no money in preventive solutions. The American Dietetic Association Supports the new MNT bill passed Wednesday evening. This legislation was approved by a veto, proof by a margin of 69 to 30, after falling one vote short of passage less than two weeks ago.

In the passed Congress limited MNT to Medicare beneficiaries with renal disease and diabetes. Dietitians could not find a way to get paid to by Medicare for offering MNT services, particularly if they had a personal practice. This bill passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives contains the correct rhetoric that should allow MNT to be expanded for therapy considered reasonable and necessary for the prevention of an illness or disability. “There is strong evidence that intensive nutrition counseling by registered dietitians can reverse hyperlipidemia, high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes,” American Dietetic Association President Martin M. Yadrick said. “While more work needs to be done to ensure Medicare correctly interprets the intent of Congress to cover expanded MNT services, passage of the Medicare bill still represents a major step forward in providing seniors on Medicare access to critical services that can improve their lives,” Yadrick said.

I know that this is an issue that does not touch many young people, but it will soon play an important role in our health. The American Dietetic Association is the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. ADA is committed to improving the nation’s health and advancing the profession of dietetics through research, education and advocacy.
